Just as your own personal appearance plays a role in how people first perceive you, your company’s product label is equally important in making first impressions. Let’s face it. Labels are the face of your brand.
In various studies, anywhere from 40% to 70% of purchase decisions are made in-store at the point of sale, so quality labels printed with an appealing design are critical to building a successful company. And in the very competitive nutraceutical world--with myriad products lining the shelves--eye-catching labels are paramount.
Know Your Product
First and foremost, your label and logo should reflect your brand and emphasize what makes your product stand out above the rest. For instance, do you use unique, high quality ingredients that are sourced from a special place? You get the picture.
Know Your Customer
Building a fantastic label requires a very thorough understanding of your customer base. Is your product aimed at women, men, people in their 20s, seniors, athletes? Some products are more precisely targeted than others, but the more you can narrow it down, the more you can differentiate yourself.
You should be able to answer the three W questions about your customers:
Who they are.
What they buy.
Why they buy it.
What are your customer’s needs? This will also help you determine your nutraceutical’s format (soft gels, tablets, etc.) and packaging (bottles, jars, blister packs, etc.), of which there is so much to choose from!
Differentiate Your Product from Your Competitors
Again, do your research. Know who your main competitors are and be sure to differentiate your brand. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and be different.
On Logos
Your logo should scream your brand. The simpler the logo, the more identifiable it is. Think Apple’s apple, McDonald’s arches. In addition, consistency is important as it raises awareness about the brand. The best strategy for enhancing the likeability of a logo has proven to be its visual distinctiveness, which could encompass name, characters, symbols and shapes.
Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Color:
In a study titled Impact of Color on Marketing, researchers found that anywhere from 62% to 90% of a consumer’s first impression of a product is based solely on color. Different colors evoke different moods. For instance, brown and green tones represent an earthy, organic feel while purple is often associated with royalty and quality. Blue is a universally pleasing color to both men and women.
Work with Experts
Don’t just choose a generic label design firm that works on all sorts of products. You want to work with a company that has a deep knowledge of the supplement industry. Not only will these specialists understand the design aspects of product labelling, but they will also be also knowledgeable about FDA and GMP compliance. If they FDA deems your product label unacceptable, they can pull your product off the market, which could result in crippling revenue loss.
A supplement manufacturing company that specializes in label design will be up-to-date on all of all of the latest FDA labeling regulations for dietary supplements guideline including typography and font sizes, minimum required information, prioritization of information, directions and warnings, and ingredient formatting.
Of course, you should also be familiar with the FDA guidelines yourself and may want to have a third party counsel weigh in.
