The holidays are a time to be grateful for what we have—especially for what we often take for granted. This year, Makers Nutrition, a full-service dietary supplement manufacturing company, wanted to help fellow Islanders who are enduring tough times. Contributing to an in-office food drive, Makers Nutrition collected 1,634 pounds total in non-perishable foods to donate to Island Harvest.
“We are absolutely thrilled to give back to the community, especially during the holidays,” said Stephen Finnegan, General Manager of Makers Nutrition. “To make sure we collected as much as possible, we added a little competition to the mix. Splitting the office into two teams, the group that contributed the most in weight would enjoy dressing casually for a whole week. The minute they heard the prize, employees began contributing to the food drive. They were especially willing to give when they read Newsday’s statistics of the poverty rate on Long Island.”
Long Island’s poverty rate is at its highest since 1959. 185,415 residents fall below the federal poverty line, according to the Long Island Association (newsday). “That was shocking to learn, but we are just happy Makers Nutrition was able to help so many local residents and families on the island. We are more than pleased with the outcome of 1,634 pounds for Island Harvest to distribute to those in need this holiday season,” said Finnegan.
