If your private label supplement line currently includes nutrients that benefit overall health, chances are that benefit also targets eye health in some way! It’s difficult to list just a few supplement ingredients that protect or improve vision and eye health exclusively, because almost ALL vitamins and minerals cover eye function. While the list is a challenge, thanks to natural medicine expert Cheryl Myers, here are three excellent nutrients that can protect us from harmful factors such as electronic screens, stress, and air pollution. The best part… you probably haven’t heard of the first two!
1. Mesoglycan
A little-known complex of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), mesoglycan is exceptional at strengthening the tiny capillaries which feed the retina. It is so effective in fact, that in a six-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 68 patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy, subjects were randomly assigned to receive either placebo or 100 mg of mesoglycan. As the end, researchers claimed “our study shows a direct action of mesolglycan on endothelium retinal blood vessels and circulation, as we observed in patients we found a significant reduction in the number of microhemorrhages, microaneurysms and exudates… We conclude that our preliminary study showed an encouraging clinical efficacy, together with excellent tolerability, and therefore our objective has been met, which was to verify the existence of the prerequisites for a larger clinical study.”
Mesoglycan is well-known in Europe, though very few have even heard of it in America. Yet, it is one of the most scientifically validated supplements for fortifying small blood vessels in our eyes.
2. Sea Buckthorn Oil
Dry eyes are caused by factors such as harsh weather and the use of contact lenses, over-the-counter and prescription drugs. A possible solution? Sea buckthorn oil. Here’s just one condition that can benefit from the supplement: Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease which causes mucous membrane dryness—and that includes the eyes. People with this condition either cannot produce enough tears to keep their eyes moist, or if they do produce enough, then the tear film is not healthy enough to prevent the eyes from drying out. A clinical study published in the Journal of Nutrition, 100 men and women aged 20 to 75 who had dry eyes were given either a placebo or sea buckthorn supplement. Three months later, eye irritation and redness were reduced considerably in the supplement group compared to the placebo group. In other studies, subjects using sea buckthorn had a much better fatty acid composition of their tear film than those in the placebo groups. Sjogren’s is just one syndrome, one health condition your next supplement can help improve.
3. Grape Seed Extract
Grape seed extract’s polyphenols called oligomeric proanthocyanins (OPCs), protect human lens epithelial cells from free radical damage by reducing inflammation. In layman’s terms, grape seed extract is great for the eyes! It helps protect the nerve cells in the retina, while its polyphenols play a major role in mitigating factors that may damage the lens and oxidative stress damage that can cause cataracts.
