Every day it seems like we receive a new piece of information regarding COVID-19—be it a CDC mask update or the nationwide vaccination rates. We have learned that while there is still no known cure for the coronavirus, dietary supplements may play a promising role in helping those who have already contracted the virus. Today, the latest supplement in the spotlight is melatonin.
Cleveland Clinic has found that melatonin consumption was linked to an approximately 30% reduced likelihood of testing positive for COVID-19. Deixiong Cheng, PhD, a researcher at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, reported that researchers have tried to fast-track potential treatments by repurposing existing drugs. Examples of such repurposing includes the use of the steroid dexamethasone and the antiviral remdesivir. Interestingly, one “drug” that Cheng’s team identified with potential: melatonin. Yes, the sleep agent.
Dr. Cheng’s team used network medicine methodologies as well as a large database of electronic health records from the Cleveland Clinic to identify symptoms and processes that the coronavirus has in common with other diseases. They obtained the host proteins that are targeted by human coronaviruses or are involved in critical pathways of the infection. These were compared to known drug-to-target interactions, and based on their analysis, melatonin was identified as a potential part of treatment for COVID-19. The two main findings: there were in fact pathways active in COVID-19 that could be impacted by melatonin. Second, people who got tested for COVID-19 at the clinic who were also consuming melatonin had a lower prevalence of testing positive for the virus.
What makes Cleveland Clinic’s study different from the rest? Dr. Cheng told sources “Recent studies suggest that COVID-19 is a systematic disease impacting multiple cell types, tissues, and organs, so knowledge of the complex interplays between the virus and other diseases is key to understanding COVID-19 related complications and identifying repurposable drugs. Our study provides a powerful, integrative network medicine strategy to predict disease manifestations associated with COVID-19 and facilitate the search for an effective treatment.”
